Many of us use automatic gearbox transmission fluid. It is designed to lubricate seals and keep them supple.

To the op; I’ve had to pistols with CO2 leakage recently, one of them quite severe. Both Umarex and I’m using Umarex carts. Both are used and I don’t know what brand they were using before. I’ve got the replacement seals but thought I’d try a hack I’d seen on the net (I know right? Likely to ruin your gun or blow up in your face?)

The hack was your humble everyday PTFE plumbers tape. Couple of wraps and it works a dream! I was deeply suspicious at first but each gun is holding gas to the last with not even a hiss! That coupled with tightening ‘just past the hiss’ seems to have done the trick for mine.

Couple of wraps where? It’ll be a pain if a small bit of tape breaks off and makes its way inside the valve etc. Normally the brand of CO2 cart doesn’t make a difference, assuming it’s from a reputable supplier. What is advised is lubing the seals (assuming they are ok) periodically- easiest to do by using something like the Umarex/Walther ‘valve maintenance’ cartridges, or else as already mentioned manually add a tiny drop of oil to the top of every third or so cartridge on installation.

So you have the cartridge seal which isn't difficult to change - but you thought you'd use a redneck bodge which might bugger up the valve and create 10x more work instead... where is the facepalm emoji when you need it?

Ah my bad, on the cartridge. I tried the oil and had the same if not worse gas dumpage. Guessing seal deformation?

Cartridges bought from local rfd. They can be different profiles. Slightly. I don’t know if that makes a difference.

I bought the correct seals from Bagnall. Just thought I’d try it as a control test. It works on an awkward ‘pinned mag’ and a ‘grip seated’ seal. I’ll end up changing the seals obvs but wanted to test out the quick n dirty fix. I was pleasantly surprised.

Yeah the cartridge seal is normally quite thick and designed, in conjunction with the screw section, to take up any slight variation. The majority of sealing is on the flat end of the cart, surrounding the ‘pin’.

It only takes one thing to not be quite aligned to deform a seal enough to leak and if it's like that a while it'll stay deformed, by all means shine a light in and check the condition first and make sure things aligned correctly but it's quite possible the Seal is out of shape even by a tiny bit as thats all it takes.
