You're probably right, although the action was black not blue, and the chemicals turn it a decent black. I thought I may have got away with it. The barrel had a long scratch on it.

Although I still wish I could get the bl**dy barrel off!
I'm using waste pipe tubes and fishing rod tubes stood upright as containers. Trouble is, the bigger the container, the more chemicals you use. I'm going to have send off for some more

Just been down to the cellar to look at it under a bright light, no I haven't. I thought you meant something else, it looked like it was welded on so I left it as part of the action.
    Now that's embarrassing. DUH

Doused in WD-40, will have another go this afternoon.

Right, lever locking knob is off!
Didn't help, heated it up for 5 minutes and the barrel wouldn't budge.
    Bugger!
I'll have to black it as one piece.

Piston is off to Liquid Steel Designs tomorrow to be altered to accept a 25mm HW seal. He is only half an hour's drive away. Result.

If I remember correctly, my .22 Osprey gives 550fps with 14,3 grains pellets after switching to the HW seal and sleeving the transfer port down to 2,5mm.
The shotcycle also went from slammy to soft.
    Too many airguns!

There's a Welsh Willy spring and guides on their way, I should have them in a few weeks. He's a very busy guy.
I shall try it with that, and if it's not right I'll look at having the transfer port seen to.

Thanks Tony. As they say, one can only try.

I couldn't believe it! Geoff at LSD machined the piston while I waited Just waiting for Will now.
Also, I found that he, Geoff does spring kits too. All within half an hour of my home.
    Very happy bunny.

Blacking done today, left it covered in oil. Will reassemble as soon as I get the spring kit from WW.

    Piston

Well, I've buggered the piston, it's now short stroked. Hitting 3ft lbs. So I'm going down the tracker piston with a 25mm TX seal route.
If I can find a Tracker piston. I've put in a Wanted ad.

How did you manage that then?

Was machined to take a HW seal, unfortunately when machining left the top of the piston as the top. So when the seal was put on it raised it by roughly 4mm, therefore short stroking it. As it is a low powered gun already,it dropped power considerably.😣

From memory of pals that did these back in the day (I never owned one personally) they removed the buffer aspect of the head, then fitted the head where the buffer was sat, increasing the stroke going from about 8ftlbs up to 10.5 in .22. with little effect on accuracy for having lost the buffer.
I suppose we would go in the other direction, shortening the stroke, with most springers of today, but the Osprey having so little to start with, it really needed some help.
However, despite being considered the dogs danglies at the time, none were as good as the Mercury I had.
Promised so much in looks terms for sure, but my sturdy Mercury always had the edge.
The method for this buffer conversion was in AGW round about 81/82 sorry I can't remember the exact date.

Just remachine your piston to take a TX seal, this will put you back to standard stroke.

The 25mm HW seal is 10mm in length and the 25mm TX seal is 6mm in length, the reduced section of the 25mm HW piston arbor is larger in diameter than the TX arbor.
I machine HW50 arbors down to accept a TX seal to Longstroke them by 4mm, so you could effectively do the same with your piston.

    Thumbs up

    Wow, thanks for that.
Looks like I'll be going back to see Geoff at LSD with those plans.
    Thanks again.

For those folks wondering what I'm on about.

    Here's a Weihrauch 25mm seal arbor :-

    Here's a TX 25mm seal arbor :-

And here are the two arbors for comparison :-

As you can see the Weihrauch seal arbor is bigger than the TX arbor which enables me to machine the Weihrauch arbor down to the size of the TX arbor and use the TX seal which is 4mm shorter than the Weihrauch seal.
