hi, a question , is there a prefered size front element when shooting bell target with diopters ? also is the steel or plastic disk best ? thanks in advance

I use a 3.4 orange coloured plastic foresight, this is shooting at 6 yards at a 3/8ths hole. Other shooters use smaller or larger plastic or metal, its what is comfortable for yourself. I experimented with different sizes and colours until I was content.

3mm plastic was my favourite, in the 66/300s, however currently using a Walther LG400, with the standard one which i'm told is 3.8mm, clear plastic is the style i prefer.
I see you are at Chesterfield, where do you shoot ,i know the Swan inn at Mansfield holds bell target shoots on a Monday night

hi i went to the white swan a couple of weeks back , a welcoming set of ringers i may add, just need to sort my sights out and find what is suitable for me by the looks /sounds of things, then ill be trying again ..

I've just checked the foresight on my Walther 55 DST and the aperture is 3mm.

I use it at both 6yds and 10m.

I manufacture the 'floating' type inserts and the sizes between 3.0 and 4.0mm are the most popular.

Very much a personal preference; I started as did many with a 2.8, but as I aged and health reduced, I increased the size; you need to think of how much ''wobble'' you have, beginners will have more, but get better hopefully, ideally you need to keep the bull within the front sight ring. So now aged almost 80 my size is up from 2.8 to 4.0. The basic guide is as follows
Take the diameter of the black that you see at the shooting distance [trigonometry here]
put a square around this
take the diagonal of that square, and that's your starting circle diameter; then factor in the given variables of age, wobble etc.
As for plastic or metal with bars that again is very personal, but bars will give you a reference if you ''cant'' the rifle. Also amber is known to increase contrast; but other colours are also popular as are the newer multi coloured ones. I like my 2 tone orange outer, yellow inner one.
