    Pump-ups

So, because I've had a few hours with blurry vision today following an eye appointment and not really being able to do anything, I've had a lazy few hours watching YT videos.

I've always loved pump-ups. And at the weekend I had another very nice play with Neil54's Daisy 880. This then led onto watching a few other videos on Crosman 2100s/766s and that favourite of mine, the little 1377.....

Well, looking at dismantling videos on the Daisy revealed it has a "dump type" valve as opposed to one that's knocked open by a hammer and spring. No wonder it felt quite refined in its air release!

All videos I watched made good viewing but after seeing the state of build of some and accuracy results etc., it really brought home to me and confirmed why the 1377 pistol platform is such a belting one. Simple, sturdy enough, so, so easy to work on, very, very accurate. And seemingly not far off the power output of many of the rifles too!

I might still be tempted by the 880, as it really does seem to be a bargain. But then it also just made me want to spend more time again with my 1377s. Now, if the Blue Streak, Setra, Innova or Ace were still available, things might be a little different......

A Sheridan Blue Streak rebarrelled in .177 or .22 from a suitable Weihrauch, Anschutz or BSA donor would be nice. Or get the Benijidan in one of the orthodox calibres.

There are a few around so it should be easy.

Everyone knows that .20 was their effort to get pellet sales, the .20 by choice is a crank's calibre.

Got a 2200w here. Considering it's age it still shoots great, Quite impressed by how it shoots, It must be a few years old now.

It’s a great shame that beyond the 1377/1322 (excellent budget gun out of the box/plastic clamshell), whatever else Crosman and Daisy may still offer, and the occasional Chinese effort they are essentially extinct.

Pumpers have a lot of attractive features (light weight, accessible accuracy, variable power). It’s just that they are not well suited to intensive pest culling or any form of competitive target shooting.

I have three pumpers. A backpacker,a 1322 backpacker clone with a 17" barrel. Both have brass barrel bands and steel breeches. I have a sharp ace .25cal which is lovely to shoot. But my fave is and always will be my backpacker. Changed the calibre to. .177cal with a 10" barrel. Lovely gun to shoot.

I want to get an SMK LR700 pumper in .177
Distributers are out of stock and have been for some time.

Oh yes, a Blue Streak thus converted would be awesome.

I did have one briefly. If you remember, you put me onto it when I first joined. But it was the (C9 version - later "Crosman type") with the cassette and didn't feel like the "real thing" so off it went.

I would love a nice earlier one. They're so slim and compact and just the right amount of heft.

I had the similar wood stock Model 1 for a few years. The naughty previous owner had it shooting over the limit and I had to get him to turn it down. That was nice enough. Should have kept it. Despite the wood stock that thin allow clamshell receiver will never give them "bombproof solidity" that the Sheridans, Benjamins, Setras, Crosman 140 and Sharp Ace and Victory had, though.

100% agree, sir. As I do with so many of your posts.

When I had the Innova and Ace I'd usually leave them at home for hunting / ratting trips. It's that lovely self-contained nature that also endears me to them - no bottles, pumps or compressors and no temperature sensitive CO2.

Lovely. Yes, your Backpacker often comes into these threads, sir, and sounds lovely. I'd love one. My 1377 is awesomely accurate (Phase III with steel breech, stock and small scope) and I love it to bits. But it isn't a Backpacker.

Great stuff. And I'll bring two or three 1377s along, Neil. So the next Bash will incorporate a "Pumper Bash".

Indeed. And I love my SSP HW40. I've often dreamed about how lovely a rifle version of the HW40 would perform. If it could be made to do 7.5 to 8 ft.lbs on one reasonable pump, I think it'd make a fantastic little thing. Shot release is so crisp with no hammers and hammer springs bouncing about. That little Daisy 880 of Neil's impressed in that respect too at the weekend.

I have an early smooth bored 760 (?) with wood front grip, and the blow-off valve makes for a unique quick firing cycle.
Really fun and fascinating to shoot, but the size and smooth bore barrel lets it down.
A bigger quality built pumper with blow-off valve and a better trigger would be a nice gun.
    Too many airguns!
